In Central American cosmology, it was the avatar Quetzalcoatl who vowed to return at some future time, when he disappeared into the ocean a thousand years ago.

I've always intuitively thought of Quetzalcoatl as a luciferic figure, in the true sense of a light bringer to his people. And with the Lucifer spirit, wherever it manifests, there is always the promise for the future.
